The school is the heart of any town, fertile ground in which to nurture the dreams of the youngest members of the community.

The municipality of Ghat, in southern Libya, now has its own school offering students important new opportunities.

Abu Baker Alseddiq School has been transformed under the EQUAL project, the result of a partnership between Helpcode, Première Urgence Internationale, Peaceful Change Initiative, local partner Pioneers for Development and the local Ministry of Governance.

There were a lot of problems to be overcome in the school: from insufficient lighting preventing lessons from unfolding properly to the lack of sufficient toilets and a smelly, obsolete sewer system.

These inadequate conditions made it impossible for students to concentrate on their studies. But the project has transformed Abu Baker Alseddiq School.

New modern, easily accessible toilets, shady areas in the yard, and repair and improvement of the sewer system have created a welcoming place that encourages study. This improvement is reflected every day in the students’ lives, as they have finally found fertile ground on which to build their future.

A word from Nabila, a student at the school
“I’m very happy that the building has finally been renovated! Though I will be going to another school now, I’m relieved to know that future students will have an opportunity to learn and have fun together in these new spaces.”
